Recent reports regarding the vote of the school board in western
Virginia have stated that bible classes in Virginia schools were
implemented after a statewide test of basic Bible knowledge was failed
by elementary school students in 1929, that they were ruled
unconstitutional in the 1940's, and replaced by the present system in
the following years.

This leads me to ask;

1. To what degree did Virginia public schools have prayer and Bible
classes prior to 1929, including the 19th Century?

2 When and why did Virginia stop having prayer and/or Bible study in the
public schools? Specific case cite would be great if known.

3 What legislation was passed and when underlying these practices and
changes.

A different report regarding the recent tiff between the State Senate
and the House of Delegates quoted a lawmaker as saying that it was
nothing compared to what went on when the democrats were in control.
Does anyone have any examples which would elucidate what he is talking
about?
