it is also a fairly common name in the Upper Valley and SW Virginia

It doesn't appear that Edward Houchins pronounced his name as Hawkins. In 
the affidavit of Richard Sandidge "Houchins" is misspelled "Howchins," which is 
probably closer to the actual pronunciation.
