will co-sponsor a conference on
Preserving Richmond's African-American
Buildings and Landscapes
Saturday, September 20, 2003
9 am to 1 pm
Sixth Mount Zion Baptist Church

Richmond, VA


The conference panelists include

    * Dr. Maurice Duke, author and Staff Historian, Alliance to Conserve
      Old Richmond Neighborhoods
    * Denise Lester, President, Burial Ground Preservation Society of
      Virginia
    * Tyler Potterfield, Senior Preservation Planner, City of Richmond
    * Selden Richardson, Architectural Historian, Alliance to Conserve
      Old Richmond Neighborhoods
    * Ronald Stallings, real estate developer

Reverend John E. Johnson, Jr., Senior Pastor, Sixth Mount Zion Baptist
Church, will serve as moderator.
Elvatrice Parker Belsches, historian and author of the Black America
Series, Richmond, Virginia will give the keynote address.
The conference schedule is

          o  8:30-9:00 am      Continental Breakfast
          o 9:00 am-Noon     Panel Discussion
          o Noon-1:00 pm     Lunch and Keynote Address

Sixth Mount Zion was the church of Reverend John Jasper, renowned in the
19th century for his sermon "De Sun Do Move."  Within the church is a
museum with mementos recalling his years (167-1901) as pastor.

Advance registration is recommended.  A $10 registration fee, which
includes breakfast, educational materials, and lunch, is payable at the
door.
