Everyone,

This is a bit of a stretch for Virginia History, but you are invited to the annual William E. and Miriam S. Blake Lecture at Virginia Commonwealth University.

On Tuesday, February 20, at 7:30 p.m. Professor Dale Hoak will speak on “God’s Empire: The English Reformation and the Invention of ‘Great Britain.” During the short reign of Edward VI (1547-53), the young king’s advisors dreamed of united the crowns of Scotland and Scotland in a “godly empire” called “Great Britain,” and they spelled out a radical, new vision of English kingship. The new vocabulary of empire, of course, also could justify voyages of exploration and, later, even colonial ventures in North America.

Dale Hoak is Chancellor Professor of History at the College of William and Mary, a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society (U.K.), and an Associate Fellow of Clare Hall, University of Cambridge.

February 20, 2007, at 7:30 p.m. at the Commonwealth Ballroom, University Student Commons, 907 Floyd Avenue.

The event is free and open to the public. A reception will follow.
