Everyone,

The annual VCU Southern Film Festival kicks off next week on Thursday, with the theme this year of Southern Women. For the full schedule, go to http://wp.vcu.edu/sff/

VA-HIST subscribers may be especially interested in “The Life and Times of Elizabeth Keckly” (2014), on Friday, September 16, at 6:30 p.m., at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts’ Leslie Cheek Theater.

Elizabeth Keckly, born enslaved in Virginia, supported herself as a seamstress and dressmaker, and amassed $1,200 to purchase her freedom. After moving to Washington, DC in 1860, Keckly soon developed an elite clientele among the women of the nation’s capital. Her dressmaking skills brought her to the attention of First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln. She became the First Lady’s favorite dressmaker and personal confidante, and established a relief organization for freedmen and injured black soldiers. Directed and produced by the filmmaker Tim Reid, this documentary explores Keckly’s extraordinary life against the national crisis of the Civil War.

Presenters will include Daphne Maxwell-Reid, co-producer Ken Roy, and Richmond historian Elvatrice Belsches, the film’s writer and researcher. My VCU colleague, Kimberly Brown, will moderate.

$8 (VMFA members $5); Free for VCU students, faculty, and staff with valid VCU ID

Again, see the full schedule at http://wp.vcu.edu/sff/

John
