I am trying to find the earliest national "Patriotic" songs played/sung in early Virginia/America -- 1607-1740. At the moment "Rule Britannia" seems to be the winner (English of course) but it did not appear until c.1740. re other type songs, I'm told that the colonists no doubt sang "Old Hundredth" at Jamestowne in 1607, and of course there is/are a gaggle of drinking (and bawdy) songs in that period.

Did the Spanish in Virginia sing any hearty national songs c. late 1600's? Did the Germans from Pennsylvania bring any down in the early 1700's? Were there any such English songs prior to "Rule Britannia"?

Reward to the first person to find earlier patriotic songs in Virginia (or America): A CD of the Cabell Consort re-living past glories in song, recorded LIVE at Williamsburg October 2000 .
