Hunting for letters written by a Civil War musician? Wondering what a
nineteenth-century gardener in Capitol Square was paid? Tracking down an
Indian student at Hampton Institute? A visit to the Library of Virginia
can answer your questions. (See below for answers to these puzzlers.)

Patrons at the Library will find a variety of finding aids and research
guides to assist them in their quest. The Archives Research Services staff
at the Library of Virginia produces a series of free publications
concerning the Archives collections. A pamphlet on genealogical research
in archival resources and a variety of research notes and topical
bibliographies are available by calling (804) 692-3888. Visit the
Library’s Web site at www.lva.lib.va.us for selected archival publications
and related digital collections.

Available publications include topical bibliographies on Hollywood
Cemetery, John Brown’s raid, Patrick Henry, Virginia women in World War I,
Civil War resources, and map reference. New additions include
bibliographies on Native American resources, landscape architecture
materials, and Virginia women in World War II. Other titles include:

Research Note 1: Land Tax Records
Research Note 2: Vital Statistics Records
Research Note 3: Personal Property Tax Records
Research Note 4: Map Collection
Research Note 5: Researching in the Archives Collections
Research Note 6: County and City Court Records
Research Note 7: Virginia Colonial Records Project
Research Note 8: Virginia Revolutionary War Records
Research Note 9: Virginia Naturalizations, 1657–1776
Research Note 10: Women’s History Resources
Research Note 11: Virginia Governor’s Records
Research Note 12: Virginia Naturalizations, 1776–1900
Research Note 13: Architectural Drawings and Plans
Research Note 14: Using Virginia Civil War Records
Research Note 15: Using Native American History Sources

The Archives Research Services staff is always working on new publications,
so stay tuned. And on your next visit, check out musician Charles L.
Rundlett’s letters from the Civil War (Accession 32581), gardener Charles
A. Ruhle’s pay voucher (Auditor of Public Accounts entry 139), and Indians
from Dakota Territory listed in the Elizabeth City Parish register
(Accession 20792).
