Seventh Annual Governor Henry Lecture:
“Privileges Transmitted to Posterity:
Jamestown, Patrick Henry, and the Revolution”
Historian Dr. Jon Kukla will present the Seventh Annual Governor Henry Lecture 
at the Library of Virginia on Thursday, April 26, and at Charlotte Court House 
on Saturday, April 28, 2007. Scheduled in connection with the 400th 
anniversary of the founding of Virginia, his lecture will discuss Patrick Henry’s 
Stamp Act Resolves and the Virginia Founders’ reliance upon the settlement at 
Jamestown as a foundation for American liberties during the Revolution.
Dr. Kukla has been executive vice-president of the Patrick Henry Memorial 
Foundation at Red Hill since 2000. A native of Wisconsin and graduate of 
Carthage College, he accepted his Ph.D. from the University of Toronto and is 
a recognized authority on 17th- and 18th-century American history, with 
special emphasis on early Virginia. Dr. Kukla was an assistant director at the 
Library of Virginia in the 1970s and 80s and he directed the Historic New 
Orleans Collection in the 1990s.
Dr. Kukla has written extensively about American history and culture in the 
major historical journals and several books, including The Bill of Rights: A Lively 
Heritage (1987), A Wilderness So Immense: The Louisiana Purchase and the 
Destiny of America (2003), and Mr. Jefferson’s Women (October 2007). He 
was a founding member of the advisory board for the Jamestown 
Rediscovery® archaeological excavations and was recently named as a 
Distinguished Lecturer by the Organization of American Historians. The 2007 
Governor Henry lecture will address themes from Dr. Kukla’s new project, a 
sweeping book about Virginia’s central role in the American Revolution from the 
Seven Year’s War through the Alien and Sedition Acts.
The annual Governor Henry Lectures are jointly sponsored by the Patrick 
Henry Memorial Foundation and the Library of Virginia. The events are open to 
the public at no charge.
Dr. Kukla’s lecture at the Library of Virginia is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on 
Thursday, April 26, 2007. His lecture in the historic courthouse at Charlotte 
Court House is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 28, 2007. Parking is 
available at both venues at no charge.
The Patrick Henry Memorial Foundation owns and operates Red Hill, the 
patriot’s last home and burial place overlooking the Staunton River in Charlotte 
County, as the National Memorial to Patrick Henry.
