Sixth Annual Governor Henry Lecture:

“Defending the Revolution:
Patrick Henry and His Arguments against the Constitution”

Dr. Carol Berkin, professor of history at Baruch College of the City
University of New York, will present the Sixth Annual Governor Henry
Lecture at Charlotte Court House on Saturday, April 29, and again at the
Library of Virginia on Monday, May 1, 2006. Her lecture will treat Patrick
Henry’s reservations about the Constitution of 1787 (and his insistence
upon amendments that became the Bill of Rights) in light of the
revolutionary ideals of 1776.

Professor Berkin received her B.A. from Barnard College and her M.A.
and Ph.D. from Columbia University, where she won the Bancroft
Dissertation Award. She teaches early American and women’s history at
Baruch College and is deputy chair of the department of history at the
CUNY Graduate Center. Professor Berkin has been a consultant for
several PBS and History Channel documentaries – and including
“Scottsboro Boys,” which was nominated for an Academy Award as the best
documentary of 2000 – and on-screen commentator for the PBS series “New
York” and the MPH / History Channel series “The Founding Fathers”,
another Academy Award nominee.

Professor Berkin’s most recent books are A Brilliant Solution:
Inventing the American Constitution (2002) and Revolutionary Mothers:
Women in the Struggle for America's Independence (2005). Her previous
books include Jonathan Sewall: Odyssey of an American Loyalist (1974);
Women of America: A History (1980); First Generations: Women of
Colonial America (1996); and Women’s Voices/Women’ Lives: Documents in
Early American History (1998).

The annual Governor Henry Lecture is jointly sponsored by the Patrick
Henry Memorial Foundation and the Library of Virginia. The events are
open to the public at no charge.

Dr. Berkin’s lecture in the historic courthouse at Charlotte Court
House is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 29, 2006. Her
lecture at the Library of Virginia is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on
Monday, May 1, 2006. Parking is available at the Library of Virginia at
no charge.

The Patrick Henry Memorial Foundation owns and operates Red Hill, the
patriot’s last home and burial place overlooking the Staunton River in
Charlotte County, Virginia.

The Library of Virginia holds the world's most extensive collection of
material about the Old Dominion and has been a steward of the
commonwealth's documentary and printed heritage since 1823.
