Everyone,

I will reply to Mr. Davenport's question about a forthcoming Library of
Virginia publication off-list.

The Library of Virginia holds a photostatic copy of the Southam Parish
Vestry Book, which runs from the 1740s to 1791. Because the colonial
vestries were responsible for processioning--making a determination of land
ownership within the vestry every few years--the vestry book also contains
the processioners' returns. Most likely for that reason, after the
post-Revolutionary disestablishment of the Anglican/Episcopal Church, the
volume in which the vestry minutes/processioners' returns had been kept went
to the county court, and it was used to record processioners' returns into
the 1830s. The Powhatan County Court today also has a photostatic copy of
the original, the whereabouts of which at present is unknown.

Subject: Publication Date of Southam Parish Vestry Book?

In March of 2001, if I recall correctly, there was notice of the
incipient
hard copy publication of an edited and indexed version of the Southam Parish
Vestry Book, Powhatan County (beginning as St. James Southam, Goochland
south
of the James, then Cumberland 1748-1777, Powhatan thereafter). On inquiry,
I
was advised by the identified editor that the publication date was
unsettled,
but was no more than a matter of months away. No updates or announcements
noticed since. The editor does not respond to e-mail query. Where does the
matter stand?
