One of the secret pleasures of archivists here at the Library of Virginia is the
names we come across in the collection. Obscure or strange surnames, given
names, and combinations thereof make for a laugh among colleagues. Rarely
are these names appropriate or glaringly inappropriate to the person based on
what we learn about them in a document. Sometimes the facts can compete
with Dickens's fiction. Can Joe Evidence be trusted? Should a man named
Singleton Livingood consider marriage? See the latest entry in the Out of the
Box blog from the archivists of the LVA.
