--and sold books earlier--when meeting with the Continental Congress in
Annapolis, he and Monroe roomed together, and when Jefferson left
(ultimately headed for Paris), Monroe a) bought the books Jefferson had
brought with him [no, I don't know _which_ books!] and b) hired
Jefferson's French cook to continue to cook and, we presume, continue
Monroe's education in French (which had begun at least as early as the
winter encampment at Valley Forge).
