I was intrigued by the fact that those discussing David Ross said they didn't know where he actually
lived. The personal property tax lists sometimes give a clue, so I checked those of 1787 and came up
with the statistics below. All white males 21 years of age or older were charged a poll tax [tithe]
in the county in which they resided, so it is possible to tell where he was NOT living.
Unfortunately, Ross is a common name and all these David Ross' s are not necessarily the one who had
iron mines. The land tax lists of these counties might be revealing. They will also make it
possible to see when he obtained land in counties where the deeds are missing.
