Dear Paul:

You raise another question. What year was Missouri made a state? I
thought the subject was settled with the the Missouri Compromise in 1820
which said that all states above a certain parallel would be free
states???

This is what happens when you write e-mails very late at night; what I
meant to
say was that the compromise barely passed thus *preventing* Missouri
from coming
in as a free state; had the South not had many extra representatives,
based on
slaves, the pro slavery compromise, bringing Mo. in as a slave state
could never
have passed the house of representatives.

thanks for the correction
