Thank you to everyone who has weighed in with kind and supportive words
about the demise of Virginia Cavalcade. This last week has been one of the
hardest of my life, made a bit easier because my colleagues who remain at
the Library, and those who made the difficult decision and delivered the
bad news, are just as devastated. I can't think of many workplaces where
the executive and the laid-off employee exchange tears and an embrace after
the exit interview.

The last day on the job for me and for Dale Harter, assistant editor, is
October 31. Thankfully, the issue we were working on, Autumn 2002 (the last
one in the current volume), will be completed and published by our friends
in Publications. They have put aside their own time-consuming tasks--and
grief--to help this 51-year tradition end with dignity. The editor's column
will explain what has happened, and a letter to subscribers will be
included in the mailing.

Starting immediately, the Library is returning all orders and checks for
new subscriptions, gifts, and renewals. The on-line ordering form has been
discontinued. Existing subscribers may request a refund of their remaining
balance in writing only (no phone calls or emails). Please mail your
request by Dec. 31, 2002, to Accounting Services, Library of Virginia, 800
E. Broad St., Richmond, VA 23219-8000.

The searchable table of contents to all fifty-one years will be available
on the Library’s website, http://www.lva.lib.va.us, as will the lesson
plans since 1997. Back issues will be available by contacting Publications,
Library of Virginia, 800 E. Broad St., Richmond, VA 23219-8000; telephone
804/692-3999.

It has been a pleasure to edit the magazine for such devoted readers.

Julie A. Campbell
Editor, Virginia Cavalcade
