The Library of Virginia is pleased to announce its new exhibition Virginia
Roots Music: Creating and Conserving Tradition. The exhibition offers an
engaging journey through Virginia's musical landscape, highlighting
traditions from the jubilee-style gospel quartets of Tidewater, to the
southwestern string bands, to the blues of the Piedmont. The audio station
provides more than seventy songs and instrumentals from commercial recording
companies, such as OKeh, Victor, and Bluebird, and from field recordings
made for the Virginia Folk-Lore Society and the Library of Congress's
Archive of American Song in the 1930s.

The next program for Virginia Roots Music is at noon, Thursday, August 8,
2002. Kip Lornell, lecturer of Africana Studies, American Studies, and
Music at George Washington University, will discuss his field research on
Virginia blues, gospel and country music. Support for the exhibition and
programs was provided by the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities and
Public Policy, the Virginia Commission for the Arts, The Bama Works Fund of
the Dave Matthews Band, Dominion, and the Library of Virginia Foundation.

Virginia Roots Music will be on view through March 22, 2003. The Library of
Virginia, located at 800 East Broad Street, is open Monday through Saturday,
9 to 5. For more information, please call 804-692-3592 or visit the Library
of Virginia's web site at http://www.lva.lib.va.us
