Isn't a Jefferson fence the official name for the serpentine brick walls
that started at UVa and now are found all over the place?

Subject: Fence--just wondering

List members:

I ran across a memorandum of agreement for the sale of some land in
Rockbridge County, ca 1852. The final sentence of the agreement asserted
the the buyer would "agrees to put up a good and lawful Jefferson fence."

Any ideas as to what a "Jefferson fence" looked/looks like.

Thanks,

Jim Watkinson
