Can anyone provide info on ways I may be able to find further genealogical
info on the forebears of one James Duke (1815-1888)? Duke worked as a spy
for Union forces during the Civil War and was a colleague of the famous
Richmond spy Eliz. Van Lew. He was apprehended and imprisoned in Richmond
and released thrugh Van Lew's efforts. His birth certificate does not list
his father's name (He was presumably deceased at the time of James'
marriage.)James' grave has no tombstone, and Eliz. Varon's recent book on
Van Lew discusses Duke in several places, but Professor Varon has informed
me that she has no further info. on him.

Thanks in advance.

Maurice Duke
