VA-HIST’s resident music historian, Randy Cabell (aka the Trumpeter of Jamestowne), was the guest speaker at the Rotary Club of Warrenton meeting yesterday at the Fauquier Springs Country Club. He presented an animated and entertaining 20-minute summary of the history of the trumpet from ancient times to the present, complete with costume and instrument changes, musical interludes and examples, quotations from a wide variety of historical documents, and humorous asides not soon to be forgotten.

Following his presentation, Randy was joined by Kevin Carter, president-elect of the Rotary Club of Warrenton, who jointly presented an autographed copy of his march composition, The Trumpeter of Jamestowne, to Andrew Paul, the director of the Fauquier High School Band. Mr. Paul also accepted a copy on behalf of Pat Neidich, director of the Liberty High School Band, which was in the midst of its final rehearsal for a major performance.

Randy’s visit to Warrenton Rotary was an obvious hit with club members, who rarely get a chance to hear an actual ram’s horn played at a club meeting or watch a speaker change costumes right before their eyes three times in the space of a 20-minute presentation. It also provided an opportunity for Randy and I to meet in person for the first time, though we have been acquainted with each other on VA-HIST for some 10 years.

GREAT SHOW, RANDY!!! Thanks for coming.

 :-) Bob
