To add to Henry's post, while it has been a long time since I looked,  I remember seeing transcripts and other notes for the original Isaac Jefferson interview in the papers of Charles Campbell in the W&M special collections.  There may be some more information about Isaac Jefferson as Campbell found him in Petersburg in those notes.  Might be worth a look.

Thanks for posting the reference to the Barnes dissertation. It might have
some information on Thomas Jefferson's blacksmith, Isaac Jefferson, who
ended up in Petersburg, apparently free -- but no one can figure out exactly
how he got there. He is the former slave who gave a long, extremely valuable
interview about life at Monticello, published in "Jefferson at Monticello,"
edited by James Bear.
