The gap is real and due to historical facts and not the loss of records.

Robert Carter, Lord Fairfax's agent died 4 August 1732 which effectively
closed down the Proprietor's books. Although William Fairfax, Lord
Fairfax's cousin was in place as his new agent by the summer of 1734, he
did not have the power to issue new grants. When Lord Fairfax visited
Virginia in 1736, he temporarily re-opened the grant process, and
thereafter grants were made and recorded until his death in 1781.
