I'm pulling my hair out trying to find a "Mrs.
Sarah Alexander" that appears in GW's financial
accounts, apparently a widow by 1765, the date
when she appears as receiving money for a slave.
A "Sarah Alexander" appears in the Va. Gazette as
having recently died in June 1771 and may be the
one. The advertisement was placed by Charles
Mynn Thruston, who himself was married to an
"Ann[e] Alexander," the daughter of a "Col.
Alexander of Gloucester." The advertisement is
seeking "William Wirt," the apparently missing
husband of "Martha Alexander." Gloucester works
well, but I can't find any Col. Alexander there;
he needs to be dead by 1765. At this point
I'm considering him as a possible husband to
Sarah, and they the parents of Ann.--? I've
looked at all the Alexanders in the Va. Gazette,
Swem, Family Search, and web search. Any help or
leads will be greatly appreciated.
