As a longtime member of the Southern Historical Association, and one of
Virginia’s representatives serving on the SHA’s 2006 Membership Committee,
I write to invite you to join this wonderful organization.

The Southern Historical Association was founded in 1934 to encourage
the study of history in the South, with a special emphasis on the history
of the South. It has since grown into one of the most important
historical organizations in the country – publishing the outstanding
Journal of Southern History and holding an annual meeting each fall that
brings together more than a thousand historians from across the country
working in the field of southern history. Those of you who have attended
a meeting of “the Southern” know that it is one of the most friendly and
open professional gatherings and that it provides an entrée into a vibrant
and energizing network of scholars committed to advancing our
understanding of the southern past. If you study, research, or write
about the American South and are not a member of the SHA you are truly
missing out on a valuable experience!

Those of us in Virginia have a special opportunity to become familiar
with the Southern Historical Association as the Southern will hold its
2007 meeting in Richmond to mark the 400th anniversary of the founding of
Jamestown. You can still submit a proposal to the Program Committee if
you would like to be part of a session or panel during the 2007 meeting.
The deadline is fast approaching, though (September 15, 2006) – and one
has to be an SHA member to appear on the program.

To learn more about the SHA, please check out the organization’s web
site at http://www.uga.edu/sha/. An online membership application can be
found at http://www.uga.edu/sha/membership/index.htm . The basic
membership fee is only $40 (and only $10 for graduate students), so it is
a terrific bargain.

For the Call for Papers for the 2007 meeting in Richmond and
information on submitting session and paper proposals, see
http://www.uga.edu/sha/meeting/index.htm.

 Thanks so much.
