Historian Garry Wills is making an appearance in Charlottesville next
Friday evening, 11/21, to talk about his new book "Negro President" on
Jefferson and the Slave Power. The book examines the role of the 3/5s
clause of the Constitution in Jefferson's election in 1800 and in
ensuring southern control of the federal government until 1860. Wills
will speak at 6:00 PM at the First Presbyterian Church, 500 Park Street,
in downtown Charlottesville. The lecture is free.

Because the Park Street bridge is closed for repairs, motorists should
exit Route 250 at the McIntire Road traffic light (a left turn
approaching from the east, a right turn approaching from the west), bear
left at the next light to remain on McIntire, take the first left off
McIntire, then at the stop sign turn left on Northwood, then right on
Park Street (all these twists and turns take just one minute). The
church will be ahead on the left, with ample parking in the church lot.
Books will be on sale.
