Richmond’s Revolutionary Patriots - Cemetery Walking Tour

Richmond and its citizens played a pivotal role in the American Revolution. This tour will highlight the experiences and sacrifices of Richmond’s Revolutionary patriots as we walk among their final resting places at St. John’s Church Cemetery and Shockoe Hill Cemetery.

Twenty-eight Revolutionary patriots are interred in the grounds surrounding St. John’s Church, founded in 1741 and the original location of Patrick Henry’s immortal “Liberty or Death” speech in March 1775. Learn about patriots such as Edward Carrington, close friend of George Washington and Quartermaster General for General Nathanael Greene’s Army; James Wood, colonel of the 8th Virginia that fought at the Battle of Brandywine and later governor of Virginia; George Wythe, signer of the Declaration of Independence and teacher of John Marshall and Thomas Jefferson; and more.

Following our graveyard tour of St. John’s Church, join us at Shockoe Hill Cemetery, established in 1822 and the final resting place of twenty-seven Revolutionary War patriots. Hear about the lives of heroes like John Marshall, who fought in battles such as Great Bridge and later became Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court; William Foushee, an army surgeon during the war and Richmond’s first mayor; Peter Francisco, known as the “Giant of the Revolution” who fought in a number of battles and confronted Tarleton’s Raiders; and others.

Suggested Donation: $10 per person

The funds collected from this tour will be used to provide Mr. Young’s John Paul Jones program or our Richmond Alive! educational program, “Life of the Revolutionary War Soldier,” to the students of a school with limited funding.
