Following up on Jon's suggestion--you may want to look at Kathleen Brown, Good Wives, Nasty Wenches & Anxious Patriarchs pp 122-124 where Margaret Cornish is mentioned within the context of free black women being tithable for most of the century between the 1660's and the 1760's although free white women were not. Free black men petitioned in the 1760's to change the law, if I remember correctly.
