Warren Fiske wrote an interesting and fairly well reseached article on
Walter Plecker and his life especially as the first registrar of the
Virginia Bureau of Vital Statistics, just follow the links below:

        http://home.hamptonroads.com/stories/story.cfm?story=74481&ran=162825
        http://home.hamptonroads.com/stories/story.cfm?story=74490&ran=160379

This is a two part series about Plecker and the eugenics movement in the
Commonwealth in the early half of the twentieth century and the havoc that
it wrecked on several Native American tribes. And yet, these articles also
show somewhat the disdain that these affected tribes had and have against
African Americans.

Note also that Sir Winston Churchill proposed sterilization as a method of
controlling interbreeding and "undesirables." Makes you stop and say
"...Hmmm!?..."

Subject: BACK TO PLECKER

This thread began with a discussion on Dr. Plecker, and has strayed away.
However, there is a book titled, Indian Island, written by Mintcy Markham
(?), which covers Dr. Pleckers life. Until I read that book, I had no idea
who this man was, or the power he held. The State of Virginia allowed this
man to wreak havoc on its' citizens. I understand that he died after being
hit by a car.
