The Valentine Richmond History Center, an AAM accredited institution,
located in Richmond's Historic Court End neighborhood, seeks to fill the
following positions:

 

POSITION #1

 

Position Title: Research Assistant 

Number of Positions: 1

Position Tenure: Temporary position, November 2006- June 2007

Hours: 20 hours per week, Tuesday - Friday, 11:30am -  4:30pm

Salary: $9.00 per hour, no benefits

 

General Responsibilities: The Research Assistant is responsible for
providing a range of reference and research services at the Valentine
Richmond History Center. This position provides these services by:
performing searches of and setting appointments in the History Center
collections that include the Archives, General Collection and Costume &
Textiles Collection; managing sales of photographic reprints and
maintaining statistics on usage, photography orders and permission fees;
participating in the evaluation and development of the Archives' finding
aids; performing other duties as required. As time permits, position
will assist with the development of finding aids for the archives that
may include inventory, cataloguing and data entry of objects in the
archives collection; review files for data entry into the i/o
collections database. This work is conducted in accordance with the
History Center's official Collections Management Policy, adhering to the
code of ethics advised by the American Association of Museums. 

 

Qualifications: Candidate must be organized and detail-oriented with
excellent customer service and interpersonal skills.   The research
assistant must hold a B.A. in history, art history or museum studies
with some experience in library or archival reference work. The research
assistant must have good knowledge of Richmond and Virginia history.
Proficiency in word processing, spreadsheets and database applications
is important.

POSITION #2

 

Position Title: Museum Technician (Richmond Times-Dispatch Project)

Number of Positions: 1

Position Tenure: Temporary position, January 2, 2007 - June 2007
[potentially until June 30, 2011]

Hours: 20 hours per week, Monday - Friday

Salary: $10.00 per hour, no benefits

 

General Responsibilities: The Museum Technician will perform various
duties related to processing the History Center's Richmond
Times-Dispatch Photograph Collection, which is comprised of
approximately 4,000 photographic prints from the Richmond Times-Dispatch
and Richmond News Leader and ranging in date from the 1950s to 1980s.
The Museum Technician is responsible for cataloging, rehousing and
digitizing parts of the Richmond Times-Dispatch Photograph Collection.
The Museum Technician's work is conducted in accordance with the
museum's official Collections Management Policy, adhering to the code of
ethics advised by the American Association of Museums.

 

Qualifications: The Museum Technician must be organized, detail-oriented
and have the ability to manage multiple takes. S/he must possess a B.A.
in history, art history or museum studies, and should be familiar with
basic archival principles and standards. S/he must be very comfortable
with technology and computers, especially databases and scanning. S/he
must be able to lift 40 lbs. Preferred: The Museum Technician possesses
an M.A. in history, art history or museum studies or M.L.S. S/he has
experience arranging and describing photographic collections. S/he has
experience working on digitization projects and is familiar with current
digitization standards.
