P.S. According to Black's Law Dictionary, a pound-overt is said to be
one that is open overhead; a pound-covert is close or covered over such
as a stable or building. Amusingly, Black's gives this last word on the
subject: "There is no more ancient institution in the country than the
Village Pound. It is far older that the King's Bench, and probably older
than the kingdom."

I agree--the livestock angle didn't even occur to me, but it makes a lot
of
sense!
