I would just like to point users to the live "Beta" site of Encyclopedia
Virginia, an online resource being published by the Virginia Foundation for
the Humanities that explores the commerce, history, culture, arts, and
sciences of the Commonwealth. So what does "Beta" mean? It means that we do
not have a critical mass of content yet (so do not be completely crushed if
you search for Robert E. Lee or Sally Hemmings and do not find them--they
will be there over time); it means we are still adding content every week;
and it also means that the interface, design, search, and other technical
functionalities (while largely in place) are still being refined.

I invite you to explore the site (http://www.encyclopediavirginia.org/) and
to offer us feedback (you will find a link at the end of each encyclopedia
entry allowing you to provide that feedback). Let us know what you think of
the content, the design, the whole EV experience.

Most of what is currently up on the site falls into the categories of
literature, twentieth century history, and the Civil War. And speaking of
the Civil War, the Virginia Sesquicentennial Commission website
(http://vacivilwar.org) has picked up our Civil War content (look under
their Education tab) and will continue to add more of our content as we
continue to publish it. The work they are doing is great, and we urge you to
explore their site as well.

Thanks!
Matthew
