The John Coles that acquired lots in Richmond is not likely to have sold
land in 1769, having been then dead 22 years.

John Coles acquired his Richmond land in 1737 from Byrd. Deeds & Wills
1725-37, p. 629. (see microfilm) He acquired more lots in 1741. (see
cypalcorp, *Henrico County Court Order Book 1737-1746*)

Will at Deeds and Wills 1744-48, p. 345 (microfilm); inventories and
accounts, see cypalcorp, *Henrico County Deeds and Wills 1750-1767.* This
book and companion volume 1767-74 track later land conveyances.

"Sources" to which you allude ("it is said that...") appear to be in error.
