The late James H. Kettner was working on the Pleasants slaves case. One essay that came out of that was James H. Kettner, "Persons or Property?: The Pleasants Slaves in the Virginia Courts, 1792-1799," in Hoffman and Albert, eds., Launching the Extended Republic (1996). I don't know if anything else came out of that study. Perhaps he left his papers and notes to Berkeley. Kettner himself stated that it was not possible with any certainty to even determine how many of the Pleasants slaves even obtained freedom -- not that such a difficulty should prevent learning something about them.

Regards,

David Kiracofe

Subject: Pleasants v. Logan

The case of Pleasants v. Logan in the High Court of Chancery at the end of the 18th century that forced the heirs of John and Jonathan Pleasants to free slaves they had inherited is well known. Can any one direct me to any work that has been done on the individuals who were freed as a result of that case. Thank you--Mick Nicholls
