SALARY RANGE $75,000 - $90,000

        The Library of Virginia is seeking a highly motivated candidate
to administer our Research & Information Services Division, responsible
for providing high-quality, innovative, and user-oriented service to the
public.  The Division ensures access to the Library's extensive printed
and manuscript holdings and provides research and reference assistance
to government officials, state agencies, historical and genealogical
researchers, and the general public.  The Division has five departments
encompassing archival research, library reference, circulation,
interlibrary loan, and oversight of collection storage in the stacks.
The Division Director also serves as a member of the Senior Management
Team that sets policy and provides strategic direction for the Library.
The Library of Virginia serves the archival and research needs of
Virginians as the Commonwealth's archival agency, the reference library
at the seat of government, and as one of the nation's premier research
institutions.

To be considered for the position, candidates must possess the
following:

*       A master's degree from an accredited university with a
concentration in library and information science, history, or other
field related to the Library's mission,
*       Considerable experience in program management and administration
in a library, museum, historical society, university, archives or
similar research or educational organization. 
*       Experience in budget preparation and management.
*       Comprehensive knowledge of the principles and practices of
library and archival administration and program management, particularly
in the area of public service.
*       Comprehensive knowledge of US and Virginia history.
*       Working knowledge of computer systems and software currently
used in the library and archival profession.
*       Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in writing,
conversation, and formal presentations.
*       Demonstrated ability to assemble, organize, motivate and direct
a professional staff.
*       Demonstrated ability to work with a wide variety of
professional, support and clerical staff and with public officials at
all levels of government
*       Ability to advise agency management on organizational and
operational issues.

An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may
substitute for requirements.  Review of application materials will begin
