David F. Allmendinger published a nifty article entitled "The Days
Ruffin Died" in the Virginia Magazine of History and Biography 97
(1989): 75-96, that very likely has the details in it and also discusses
conflicting evidence about which day it was that Ruffin killed himself.

Subject: [VA-HIST] Edmund Ruffin's Sucide

Here's a strange, indeed macabre, question: where did Edmund Ruffin
shoot himself when he committed suicide? Head or chest?

For some reason I feel that I absolutely need to know this as I write a
long book review; probably just to remove the writer's block.
