Please remember that using the "reply" function with a Va-Hist message
automatically sends the reply to the whole number of Va-Hist subscribers
(several hunderd of us).

Because that process takes place automatically (and instantaneously when the
Internet is not clogged up with heavy business), we all need to remember to
keep calm and keep our messages impersonal.

The recent extended discussion about issues relating to slavery threatened
to get too warm and personal. Neither of the "moderators," who monitor
rather than moderate, the list can always be at a computer to signal that a
discussion may be getting out of hand.

Thanks to all who took part in the substantive and interesting discussion.
It is the variety of perspectives that we all bring to these discussions
that makes them lively and educational. These subjects are of vital
importance to understanding our past and ourselves and they cannot and
should not just go away.
