AMERICAN REVOLUTION ROUND TABLE of RICHMOND

Bullets and bayonets! Before they could be used, they had to be manufactured, along with all the other necessities of war. Join us on Wednesday, March 21, as Robert F. Smith will present Manufacturing Independence: Industrial Innovation in the American Revolution, the title of his recent book. Bob is coming down from Pennsylvania to speak on this unique and very interesting topic. Some of you have heard him present at last year’s Conference of the American Revolution. His book is another fine offering from Bruce Franklin’s Westholme Publishing, the premier revolutionary source. http://westholmepublishing.com/ The usual details will follow in March.

Here’s the last call for this coming weekend’s WYARRT Seminar on the Virginia Campaign of 1781. https://williamsburg-yorktownarrt.weebly.com/

Congratulations to Lynne and Bruce Venter, whose 7th Conference of the American Revolution is totally sold out and bursting at the seams! Don’t wait until the last minute next year. It looks to be another outstanding symposium.

Thanks to Sharon Morgan, here’s a link to the Durham boat story that she mentioned at the last meeting. https://www.iup.edu/magazine/2017-fall-winter/sunken-treasure/

David Chubb of New Jersey sent this item about George Washington the map maker. https://www.varsitytutors.com/earlyamerica/early-america-review/volume-5/mapmaker-mount-vernon Thanks, David.

Congratulations to Jon Kukla, our January speaker, whose Patrick Henry: Champion of Liberty, was just been selected as one of the seven finalists for the 2018 George Washington Prize. The George Washington Prize honors the year’s best new works on early American history, especially those that have the potential to advance broad public understanding of American history. Created in 2005, this $50,000 prize is one of the nation’s largest literary awards, and is sponsored by Washington College, the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, and George Washington’s Mount Vernon. The winner will be announced just before the annual award ceremony on May 23 at Mount Vernon. Thanks again and good luck to Jon.

George Washington’s hair? Right here. http://www.cnn.com/videos/us/2018/02/14/george-washington-lock-of-hair-discovery-orig.cnn

And cadaver dogs in Georgia https://www1.cbn.com/cbnnews/2018/february/cadaver-dogs-used-to-help-archaeologists-find-soldiers-graves-at-american-revolution-battlefield-in-georgia

For those of you who listen to and enjoy Liz Covart’s podcast Ben Franklin’s World, Liz will be appearing at Virginia Commonwealth University this Wednesday at 4 PM. Details are here. http://has.vcu.edu/hrc-spring-2018-speaker-series-liz-covart/?mc_cid=b7f1e50410&mc_eid=b620f6d414

Finally, the board of ARRT-Richmond approved a donation of $100 to Campaign 1776, as part of their last emergency fund raising effort to purchase the disputed parcel of land at Princeton. This acquisition from the Institute for Advanced Study will secure the battlefield land that has been so much discussed over the last few years. With our assistance, the final piece of the financial and land puzzle will be in place and secured.

See you on March 21.

Bill
