The suit you referred to is a chancery suit heard in Nelson County. It is filed with the Nelson County chancery causes found at the Library of Virginia. The index number and style of suit is Nelson County Chancery Cause 1859-005 Landonia Randolph vs. Nancy C. Kincaid, etc. The etc. includes the executor of George Williams who was married to Frances E. Kincaid. Landonia loaned a slave named Sarah Ann to Frances E. and Ann C. Kincaid with the stipualtion that the arrangement was temporary. Eventually, Sarah Ann and any children she had would revert back to Landonia. That did not happen and Landonia sued to have the slaves returned to her. The suit includes depositions, correspondence to and from Landonia Randolph of Shirley Plantation, and documents related to hiring out of the slaves that give the names and ages of the slaves.

Dear Mick,
I can't help you with your question but I have a question for you. I've been working with the Shirley Plantation Papers--transcribing them for Charles Carter. There is a very complex case concerning some slaves that I think would make a good study for somebody but I don't know who. The problem begins in the 1820's and is tried in the Nelson County Court in the 1850's and won by the plaintiff but is appealed. There is a batch of correspondence between John Thompson, jr. of Amherst, representing the plaintiff, Landonia Randolph, and her relative, William F. Wickham of Hanover. If you would like to know more let me know. The case is Randolph v. Williams' Executors. You may be familiar with it already.
I hope all is going well with you and yours.
Harold
