On March 16, 2001, the Library of Congress in cooperation with the James Madison Commemoration Commission, will host a symposium to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the birth of James Madison, the nation*s fourth president. The symposium, *James Madison; Philosopher and Practitioner of Liberal Democracy,* is co-sponsored by the Henry Salvatori Center, Claremont McKenna College, Claremont, California. The symposium will explore the thought and character of Madison as well as his many significant contributions to our nation*s history: composing notable state papers in defense of religious liberty, 1776 and 1785; acting as the architect and principal defender of the Constitution of the United States, 1787-1788; introducing the legislation that produced the Bill of Rights, 1789; serving as Secretary of State, 1801-1809, and as President of the United States, 1809-1817. The symposium is open to the public without charge or advance reservation.
