I understand anecdotally that it wasn’t generally Christians who responded but Mormons in particular. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is the preferred reference. 

The wife of a distant cousin of mine explained her Armenian roots by saying her grandfather converted as a way to escape the genocide. Others in the family were not so fortunate. A member of my family a couple of generations ago married into the faith in the US  although he did not convert until he was in his very advanced years. It was his descendant who married the descendant of the Armenian genocide escapee.
