The smallest footnote to this excellent story would have George Wythe, as early as 1783 (before the order for the Houdon statue in the Capitol), requesting a (decidedly non-equestrian) statue of Washington at the College of William & Mary, and proposing that the College be forever changed to Washington University, in his honor:
