The numbers usually provided by professionals in the
field of Civil War history are 360,000 Union dead (from
battle and disease) and 258,000 Confederate dead (from
battle and disease). The total of 618,000 is also often
rounded off to 620,000. These are estimates, of course,
because some records (especially Confederate) did not
survive the war, but they are probably as close to
the "true" numbers as we will ever have.
