Subscribers to this list may be interested in a new book by Wesley E.
Pippenger, *Essex County, Virginia Buildings in Photographs*, which
features 312 old and new photographs of structures in Essex County,
Virginia. Collections that are strongly featured are photographs from the
Virginia Department of Historic Resources in Richmond, the archives of
the *Rappahannock
Times* newspaper in Tappahannock, those taken by the compiler and many
shared by local enthusiasts. Included are color and black and white
photographs, one per page, of mostly dwellings, with country stores, barns,
schools or churches, and are arranged roughly in alphabetical order. Many
extant photographs of mills or county churches have been previously
published in a 204-page companion volume released in 2014 by this compiler,
as *Tappahannock and Essex County, Virginia in Early Photographs* or in
other titles. Of particular interest is included a detailed Appendix of
data and source citations about property and place names and county
geographical features. Coupled with this data is a color map, as
endpapers, which shows known location of the photographed structures as
well as over a hundred features like bridges, creeks, landings, mills,
points, roads (1971), runs, swamps. 408 pages, 11”x 8-1/2”, hard bound with
color case cover, Appendix, Index.
