How were they located (i.e., are they interfiled with other records, or in
a separate collection? Clerks did not file Naturalization Records in
separate location from other records. Where the pre-1907 Naturalization
records were filed varied one locality to the next. They were mixed in with
Judgments, Dead Papers, Miscellaneous Papers; Circuit Court Papers, County
Papers, Ended Causes, etc.

Are they housed at the Library of Virginia or at the local court? The
records we posted online are stored here.

How were they located? They were found by archival staff mixed in with
Judgments, Dead Papers, Miscellaneous Papers; Circuit Court Papers, County
Papers, Ended Causes, etc. They were identified, processed, conserved,
indexed, and filed in boxes titled the name of locality, Naturalization
Records.

Are these all that are available or are others from the listed counties or
other counties available (or do we know)? There is a possibility more could
be found from current localities we posted or localities whose records have
yet to be examined.

We have created finding aids for the Naturalization Records for the
localities we posted online. You can read them to learn more. The link to
the locality's finding aid can be found in the catalog record or you can
search them at www.vaheritage.org.
