AMERICAN REVOLUTION ROUND TABLE of RICHMOND

Please join us on Wednesday, May 8, to hear Sam McKelvey present "Francis Lightfoot Lee and His Home Called Menokin." Lee was a signer of the Declaration of Independence and a member of the famous Lees of Virginia family. We will also present our Preservation Partner 2018 check to Sam and Menokin. Dinner begins at 5:30, followed by the regular meeting at 6:30, in the Heilman Dining Center at the University of Richmond. Maps are here. https://www.richmond.edu/visit/maps/print/campus.pdf

For those of you in the Richmond area, Boomer Magazine, available free in many local businesses, has an Menokin article in the current issue. Get a preview of Sam's talk.

PLEASE NOTE - DUE TO THE DINING CENTER'S SUMMER SCHEDULE, THIS MEETING IS ON MAY 8, THE SECOND WEDNESDAY, NOT THE THIRD.

MAIL CHIMP - ARRT-Richmond will soon be moving to Mail Chimp for our regular announcements. This is due to the ever increasing size of our distribution lists and my continuing email issues. You will shortly be receiving notice of the change, WHICH WILL REQUIRE YOU TO REGISTER FOR OUR LIST. IF YOU DO NOT REGISTER, YOU WILL NOT RECEIVE ANY OF OUR ANNOUNCEMENTS. We will provide simple directions for registration. Thanks to our board member Karen Chase, who is shepherding us through the change over. More details will follow - soon, we hope.

We have now distributed over 800 copies of our Revolutionary Richmond brochure around the area, at both historical sites and visitors centers. The response has been very positive. We're still in the fund raising stage for the next run. Any ideas as to funding sources would be greatly appreciated. Any contibutors will be recognized on the folder. Thanks.

Our South Carolina friend David Reuwer informed us of the passing of Michael C. Scoggins, the author of The Day It Rained Militia and the preeminent historian of South Carolina in the revolution. To quote David, "He shared more facts and contextual understanding with other authors and scholars than he ever wrote down because it was in his powerful mind. His mindful elasticity was superseded only by the comprehensiveness of his brain to retain facts and figures. Always he made time and effort to answer a research question from anyone, anywhere, including history buffs, enthusiasts and genealogists. He was a founding and stalwart fellow of the Southern Campaigns of the Revolutionary War Round Table."

The Historic Petersburg Foundation will host "The Road to Yorktown" on Tuesday, April 30th, at 7 pm in the Union Train Station at 103 River Street in Petersburg. Dr. John Maass will speak on the British invasion of Virginia in the spring and summer of 1781. After his presentation he will sign and sell The Road to Yorktown: Jefferson, Lafayette, and the British Invasion of Virginia and George Washington's Virginia. I suspect that many of you have already hear or seen this about Pulaski. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-6884677/Researchers-claim-war-hero-Casimir-Pulaski-biologically-female.html As one historian suggested, Pulaski died a hero, so the rest doesn't really matter - except maybe in this case. From John Millar -

News was announced this weekend that very reputable forensic specialists in Georgia had a chance to analyze the body of US Revolutionary War general, the Polish Count Casimir Pulaski, who died in a battle at Savannah in 1779. Right after his death, some of his friends in Williamsburg founded the Pulaski Club in his honor, which is still going strong. Members of the Club sometimes meet at some nice sidewalk wooden seats on Duke of Gloucester Street near the corner of Nassau Street, where a plaque recognizes the club. The forensic specialists found without a shadow of a doubt that Pulaski was actually a woman in disguise. The Pulaski Club, which permits itself to have as many members as the number of years elapsed since Pulaski’s birth, limits its membership exclusively to men, no women … Ooops!

Finally, from our friends in SCAR.

May 4, 2019 – Camden, SC – Southern Campaigns of the American Revolution (SCAR) presents a Corps of Discovery touring the Battle of Camden site and the Battle of Hobkirk Hill. Join master tour guides and SCAR Fellows David P. Reuwer and Charles B. Baxley for a comprehensive tour of these two important Revolutionary War battlegrounds. Meet at the Camden Battlefield and Longleaf Pine Preserve (1606 Flat Rock Road, 4.5 miles north of Camden) at 10:00 am to start the tours of the Camden Battlefield.

https://www.historiccamden.org/camden-battlefield

Dr. Tray Dunaway will talk about the 18th c. restoration forestry on the site. The forestry program has opened up the site so that viewing most of the important military terrain is now possible. We will have an update from the Historic Camden Foundation, new steward of the battlefield and final resting place for hundreds of American and British soldiers, and a report on the new Liberty Trail and its connections to 69 important South Carolina Revolutionary War sites.

After a lunch break (on your on), gather again at the parking lot for Historic Camden Revolutionary War site (222 South Broad Street, US Hwy 521, Camden) and carpool to Camden’s in town battlefield, Hobkirk Hill. The tours will wrap up at about 4:00 pm. This event is free and the public is invited. Bring your hiking shoes, dress for the weather, the tours go rain or shine. Your guides: Bill Denton, Rick Wise, Tom Oblak, and Guy Wallace. For more information see http://www.southerncampaign.org/corps-of-discovery.

Both Camden and Hobkirk Hill are well worth exploring, especially with David and Charles.

See you on May 8.

Bill
