	In looking for something else I found this anecdote from 1997 on the Romanticism listserv;  True?



In the early years of this closing century, the College of William and Mary

very nearly lost its charter when one august legislator discovered that

there was terrible hanky-panky going on there, in that den of liberal

iniquity. It stated right on the first page of the catalog that male and

female students _matriculated together_ on campus. A large minority of

legislators were not only shocked at such behavior being permitted, they

were insulted by the fact that the school had the gross effrontery to

advertise it.
