AMERICAN REVOLUTION ROUND TABLE of RICHMOND

Hi Folks,

At our next meeting on September 21, we’ll look at the other side of the coin when Stephanie Seal Walters presents “Tories in the Shadows: Loyalism, Society, and Warfare in Virginia During the American Revolution.” The regular meeting reminder will follow.

Here’s other news.

We’ve arranged two tours of the new American Revolution Museum at Yorktown, our 2016 Preservation Partner. The first will be Saturday, October 22, at 10:30. The second will occur in conjunction with the WYARRT November conference. Details will be available at our September meeting.

Visit Mount Vernon for an interview with our own Mark Lender about his new Fatal Sunday: George Washington, the Monmouth Campaign, and the Politics of Battle, the new Monmouth standard. http://www.mountvernon.org/george-washington/the-revolutionary-war/fatal-sunday-george-washington-and-the-monmouth-campaign-of-1778/ Mark and Garry’s book has been nominated for the George Washington Award. Congratulations! And great shirt, Mark.

Writing of books, here’s Harry Ward’s new book Bunco Artists in Richmond, 1870 – 1920 available for pre-order. https://smile.amazon.com/Bunco-Artists-Richmond-1870-1920-Flimflammers/dp/147666692X/ref=sr_1_fkmr1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1472324289&sr=1-3-fkmr1&keywords=bunko+artists+in+richmond Not revolutionary, but still fun.

For those who missed our John Maass’ Tarleton Tour a few years ago or want a repeat trip, here’s another chance with the Civil War Education Association / American History Forum. http://www.cwea.net/programs/1704-american-revolution-banastre-tarleton%E2%80%99s-charlottesville-raid-field-tour

More September activities from the Museum of the American Revolution are here:

From Debby Padgett, Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation, 757-253-4175

2016 Revolutionary War Lecture Series Leads Up to Debut

of American Revolution Museum at Yorktown Exhibition Galleries

YORKTOWN, Va., July 28, 2016 – The Yorktown Victory Center’s annual Revolutionary War lecture series will this year preview new permanent exhibition galleries debuting in mid-October in conjunction with the museum’s change in name to American Revolution Museum at Yorktown. On four consecutive Tuesdays in September, Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation staff speakers will explore a range of topics linking to gallery storylines. Illustrated with elements of the new galleries, including a selection of artifacts that will be on exhibit, the free public lectures are at 7 p.m. in the Yorktown Victory Center theater.

September 6 – “Defending the Commonwealth: Lafayette and the Summer of 1781.” Historian Ed Ayres will discuss how in 1781 General Lafayette’s troops continued to counter a large British force that had invaded Virginia. His bold actions kept the state’s defense from collapsing before the arrival of an allied army that later trapped Cornwallis at Yorktown.

September 13 – “Journey Through the American Revolution in 10 Objects.” Senior Director of Museum Operations and Education Peter Armstrong will describe the stories behind 10 of the most surprising objects visitors will see in the new American Revolution Museum at Yorktown galleries, and how they helped define a new nation.

September 20 – “James Lafayette: Invisible Spy.” Curator Kate Gruber will share newly uncovered research on the life and times of James Lafayette, including his own fight for personal liberty after helping secure the Patriot victory at the Siege of Yorktown through his work as a spy, infiltrating British camps and gathering information for the American side.

September 27 – “Digging Yorktown’s Past: An Archaeological View of 18th-Century Yorktown.” Ed Ayres will provide an overview of several key archaeological excavations in Yorktown in the 1970s. Special attention will be given to work at the 1781 Grand French Battery on the first allied siege line.

About the Yorktown Victory Center

The Yorktown Victory Center, located at Route 1020 and the Colonial Parkway (200 Water Street), chronicles the American Revolution, from colonial unrest to the formation of the new nation, through indoor exhibits and historical interpretation at outdoor re-creations of a Continental Army encampment and Revolution-period farm. Under the administration of the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation, a Virginia state agency, the museum is undergoing a transformation and will be renamed American Revolution Museum at Yorktown with the debut of an introductory film and expansive permanent exhibition galleries on October 15, 2016. Work continues on constructing outdoor visitor amenities and a living-history Continental Army encampment and Revolution-era farm, and a grand opening celebration will take place March 23 through April 4, 2017. The Yorktown Victory Center remains open to visitors daily. For more information, visit www.historyisfun.org or call (888) 593-4682 toll-free or (757) 253-4838.

Finally, John Maass sent this item about Lafayette. http://www.fayobserver.com/news/local/rare-items-honor-rock-star-lafayette-at-methodist-university/article_7ae35e12-0616-5e3a-8867-b230207f34ab.html

Enjoy the rest of this hot summer. See you in September.
