Dear fellow Virginian archivists and historians:
I am heartbroken over the passing of my friend E. Lee Shepard. Lee was one of the first friends I made in the archival profession. I'm heartbroken beyond words.

I learned of the death Thursday, 20 September 2018, of E. Lee Shepard, who retired last year after a long career at the Virginia Historical Society.
All I know is that Lee had a rare heart condition that from time to time gave him trouble. I found no death notice in the Friday Richmond newspaper.
When we have something else to post we will.
Every student of Virginia's history has profited from the work Lee did as curator of manuscripts, archivist, and vice president for collections at the Historical Society. If you didn't know him personally, you will have seen the results of his work in the substance of scores of books and journal articles that built on his collecting manuscripts, books, and other primary resources for all aspects of Virginia's history. If you did know Lee personally, you had the pleasure of knowing one of the nicest of men.
