Howdy colleagues,
I'm hoping folks on this list can recommend some good sources looking
specifically at the impact in Richmond and perhaps across Virginia more
generally of the Panic of 1837, and the multi-year economic downturn that
followed.
My focus/interest centers more on social history than economic history, and
particularly on African American history; but of course the daily
experiences of the people I study were shaped by economic forces that I
realize I need to wrap my head around.
The studies I've found on the Panic of 1837 and what followed are either
national in scope or focus on geographic areas outside of Virginia.
Conversely, I haven't found much discussion of this particularly economic
downturn in the histories of Richmond and of Virginia that I know well. I
suspect some of you may be able to easily remedy my deficiency on the topic!
Thanks,
Lois
