Did you look in the governor's papers? I found that many of the court
records of a 19th-century capital case involving a slave had been
transferred at that time to the governor's papers, because he had to
rule on clemency and compensation to the owner. When the state
executed a slave it was a "taking" of property, requiring compensation
to the owner from the state.
