Everyone,

The 6th Annual Southern film Festival will take place in Richmond, 10-12 September 2015. The theme is “Screening Southern Music: Exploring Musical Traditions & Stereotypes in Popular Film.” All the events are open to the public.

On Thursday, Kathy Merlock Jackson speaks on Disney’s notorious Song of the South at the Depot, 814 W. Broad St. (reception at 5:30 p.m., keynote at 6 p.m.).

Friday, 6:30 p.m., Mary Pickford in Heart of the Hills (featuring music by the Hot Seats) at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, 200 N. Boulevard. Admission $8 (VMFA and Art deco Society members $5, and free with VCU ID). Yours truly will be moderating!!!

Saturday, at 10 a.m., Elvis (of course) in King Creole, at Sticky Rice, 2232 W. Main Street, admission $8 (includes breakfast buffet).

At 2.m. Porgy and Bess, at the Grace Street Theater, 934 W. Grace Street, free. 

And, 5 p.m., We Shall Overcome, a documentary about the anthem of the Civil Rights Movement, with comments from activist Joan Trumpauer-Mullholland and a performance by VCU’s Black Awakening Choir, also at the Grace Street Theater and free.
